The Transitional Unit at The HSC Pediatric Center (HSC) is a twenty-eight-bed medical unit. Patients admitted to this unit are usually between the ages of birth and five years, and may have cardiac, respiratory, neurological, gastrointestinal, and/or developmental problems.

The Transitional Care Unit is a multi-disciplinary team of nurses, pediatricians, gastroenterologists, respiratory care practitioners, rehabilitation professionals, psychologists, and dietitians. The goal is to transition the child from the acute setting to the home environment. Education of the parents/caregivers in all aspects of the child's care is essential to achieving this goal.

The Rehabilitation Unit staff works in conjunction with Medical Staff, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Recreation Therapy, Psychology, Child Life and Respiratory Care to develop an individualized plan of care to assist each patient in achieving their optimum level of functioning.

Preemie Express (2 West)

The Preemie Express Unit at The HSC Pediatric Center is a twelve-bed post-Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) unit. Patients admitted to this unit usually need transitioning from the acute NICU setting to their home setting or to our Transitional Care Unit. Patients may have respiratory, cardiac, gastrointestinal, developmental, or genetic problems.

The Preemie Express staff uses intensive assessment skills in order to evaluate progress and works hand in hand with Neonatology, Pediatrics, Respiratory Care, Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Nutritional Therapy to achieve the individualized treatment plan goals for each infant.
