Medical programs at The HSC Pediatric Center serve children with a wide range of medical conditions, such as heart and lung disease or feeding problems. Most of these patients come to us from other hospitals, and are working on a safe transition home. They may need more time to work on feeding or for their lungs to grow, or the family may need more time to learn to care for their child. As with every patient admitted to HSC, our medical patients are cared for by a multi-disciplinary team that evaluates each child’s unique needs and creates a plan tailored to the individual child.
Our Rehabilitation program is one of the few pediatric rehabilitation programs in the area. Children in the rehabilitation program usually come to us after an injury, illness or surgery, and work with our team of specialists to achieve their best level of function in order to thrive at home. Rehabilitative care is provided under the medical direction of a pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist (also called a physiatrist), along with a team of pediatricians, pediatric nurse practitioners, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, dieticians, psychologists, social workers, case managers, and recreational/child life specialists.
The Developmental program provides comprehensive care for patients whose health care needs cannot be safely met in a community setting. Children admitted to the program are often dependent on medical technology and receive care in a supportive environment that focuses on overall quality of life and maintaining good health. Because of the extended length of stay for many of these patients, they attend school outside The HSC Pediatric Center, if medically appropriate. Family members of patients in the Developmental program are strongly encouraged to participate in activities on the unit.
Our Medical Extended Stay program provides extended care for children who are chronically ill and require an advanced level of care. These patients have a variety of complex conditions and higher overall care needs. Despite their medical fragility, some of these patients are able to attend school on individualized schedules, while others benefit from participating in community outings. Like all patients at HSC, patients in this program benefit from a team of health care providers to meet individual care needs.
