Hospital for SIck Children

The HSC Pediatric Center is a leader in providing innovative, highly effective rehabilitation and medical care for children with complex medical problems and disabilities. Medical conditions treated include developmental delays, mental retardation and other complex disabilities resulting from chronic disease, injury, and the results of extreme prematurity. Our programs are organized to provide for the special needs of children with diagnoses such as

  • reactive airway disease
  • severe gastrointestinal disorders
  • chromosome abnormalities
  • dysfunctional feeding disorders
  • fetal alcohol syndrome
  • HIV infection
  • cerebral palsy
  • traumatic injury
  • sickle cell anemia
  • reactive airway disease
  • burns
  • ventilator-dependency
  • and many other debilitating conditions
Most of the children admitted to The HSC Pediatric Center have multiple diagnoses.

FOCUS is an activity-based program for outpatients who use innovative equipment, such as gait trainers and self-propelled standers to teach children with severe disabilities the basic functional motor skills needed to sit, stand and walk. The goal is to improve quality of life through more independent living. We are the only pediatric facility in the Washington area that has a warm water therapy pool, which facilitates relaxation in children undergoing therapy.

Assistive Technology. The mission of The HSC Pediatric Center Assistive Technology Team is to maximize the functional independence of children with disabilities through the use of technology. Assistive Technology enables children with disabilities to communicate, learn, play, interact, access, and control their environment.

The Outpatient Center provides assessments and treatment in Psychology, Physical Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Audiology, Developmental Pediatrics, Dentistry, and Assistive Technology. The Center is staffed by highly qualified clinical professionals who have helped establish HSC's long-standing reputation for providing quality, family-centered care. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5PM. To schedule an appointment, please call 202-635-6580.

The Pediatric Feeding Management Program of Greater Washington is a collaborative effort between The HSC Pediatric Center and Children's National Medical Center. It is designed for infants and children who have difficulties in feeding patterns that compromise nutrition, growth, and/or family interactions.

The Transitional Infant Program (TIP), which includes Preemie Express and Li'l BITs (Babies in Transition). TIP is a cost-effective, high quality alternative designed to address the needs of premature infants who are ready to leave the NICU, but are not ready to go home. Preemie Express provides round-the-clock care for premature infants who have oxygen needs and respiratory issues, such as immature lungs, apnea and bradycardia, and/or a complicated neonatal course requiring technology support. Li'l BITs provides 24-hour care for otherwise healthy low-birth-weight babies who must "feed and grow" before their transition to the home environment.
