The mission of The HSC Pediatric Center’s Equipment Clinic Team is to maximize the functional independence of children with disabilities through the proper evaluation and provision of Durable Medical Equipment and Orthotics. In one short visit, a team of skilled professionals evaluates your child individually for his/her equipment and orthotic needs. The prescription and paperwork is initiated and submitted to the vendor. The equipment or orthoses can be delivered to the hospital, home or school. Input from a child’s home and/or school therapist is always welcome!

Who works in the Equipment Clinic?

The Equipment Clinic Team consists of the following people: the child and their family, board certified physiatrist (pediatric rehabilitation physician), Licensed and registered physical therapists, licensed and registered occupational therapists, certified orthotist/ prosthetist (brace maker), equipment vendor, interpreter (as necessary). Many of our team members are certified as Assistive Technology Practitioners and/or Suppliers.

What services does the Equipment Clinic Team provide?

  • Seating and Positioning Assessment – We evaluate your child’s seating and positioning in their current seating system if appropriate and make adjustments for greater comfort and alignment. We assess your child’s current fit in their seating system.
  • Wheelchair Evaluation/Fitting – We assess your child’s need for a manual vs. power wheelchair, assess accessibility of home, and discuss transport of wheelchair. Once a decision has been agreed upon, measurements are taken.
  • Additional Durable Medical Equipment (DME) – We assess and measure for the following equipment as well (not limited to): adapted strollers, Kid Kart, tumble form seat, standers, gait trainers, canes, crutches, walkers, adapted tricycle, activity chair, hospital bed, bath chairs.
  • Orthoses – We assess for the following different types of orthoses to improve balance, gait, functional use, and/or prevent deformities:
  • Lower Extremity Orthoses – AFO braces, DAFOs, SMOs, Pattibobs, HKAFOs, Knee Extension Splints
  • Upper Extremity Orthoses – Elbow Extension Splint, Hand Splints, Benik Soft Splints
  • Trunk Orthoses – TLSO (thoraco lumbar sacral orthosis), Benik Trunk Supports
  • Client and Family Training – We train your child and family to use, maintain each piece of equipment and/or don orthotics.
  • Follow-up Services – A letter of Medical Necessity is completed shortly after clinic and is submitted to the vendor and insurance case manager. We provide the opportunity for the child to return to clinic for fitting of the orthotics or durable medical equipment if the family chooses to be fitting in clinic vs. home or school.
